Conservation review and museum-standard reframing of a contemporary print to ensure its long-term preservation.

Overview

Donut (Strawberry) is a signed and numbered screenprint by Banksy from an edition of 299, presented in a modern frame with low-reflective glazing. Although the artwork arrived in near-mint condition, the owner requested an independent conservation assessment to confirm that both the print and its framing provided appropriate long-term protection. During examination, minor handling marks and a small area of fibre lifting were identified.

Conservation Strategy

In this case, the objective was not extensive treatment but preventive conservation.

Rather than waiting for deterioration to occur, the project focused on addressing minor structural issues, reviewing the existing framing system and ensuring that the artwork could be displayed safely without compromising its long-term condition or market value.

The intervention followed the principle that preventive conservation is often the most effective conservation strategy.

Treatment

Minor handling marks were carefully reduced through controlled local humidification and flattening, while areas of lifting fibres were stabilised using reversible conservation-grade adhesives.

The framing system was then fully reviewed. Existing materials were retained where appropriate and upgraded to museum standards with the addition of a 100% cotton backing board and 99% UV-filtering glazing, providing improved physical support and long-term protection without altering the original presentation of the artwork.

Outcome

The artwork was stabilised without altering its original character, while the revised framing system significantly improved its long-term protection during handling and display.

The project demonstrates how early conservation advice and appropriate framing can help preserve both the physical condition and the long-term value of important contemporary works on paper.
