Reducing discolouration caused by prolonged display while protecting sensitive media

Overview

This original drawing by Keith Haring had remained on display for many years without adequate protection. Prolonged exposure to light and unsuitable framing and glazing had resulted in paper oxidation, discolouration, adhesive residues and localised structural damage. Although the artwork remained stable overall, these alterations significantly affected its appearance and required specialist conservation.

Conservation Strategy

The primary objective was to recover the visual balance of the artwork while respecting the limitations imposed by its original materials.

Preliminary testing revealed that the red marker was sensitive to moisture, requiring a carefully controlled treatment that would reduce discolouration without placing the media at risk. Every stage of the intervention was therefore adapted to the specific behaviour of the artwork rather than following a standard treatment approach.

Treatment

Following thorough surface cleaning and the careful removal of aged adhesive residues, the artwork underwent a series of controlled aqueous cleaning treatments carried out on a suction table. This allowed moisture to be applied with precision while protecting the sensitive drawing media. Small tears were repaired using reversible conservation materials. The treatment concluded with controlled flattening and the preparation of museum-standard archival housing to ensure safe storage and future display.

Outcome

The treatment successfully reduced the visual impact of prolonged ageing and restored the overall balance of the composition while preserving the original drawing materials.

Although light fading is irreversible, careful conservation significantly improved the presentation and stability of the artwork, allowing it to be safely displayed and appreciated while protecting its long-term condition.
